Saury Saury Saury!

Autumn is the best time to eat Pacific saury because it’s just getting the fat on it, and also the price gets cheaper then.
We call it Sanma ‘秋刀魚’, literally translated as “autumn sword fish”. As you see it in the name, Pacific saury is one of the most prominent seasonal foods representing autumn in the Japanese diet.

I heard the happy news that Pacific saury is expected to have a good crop this year!
I love this fish not only because it is very tasty and reasonably priced but also very healthy, packed with omega-3s, DHA and EPA and vitamins, calcium, iron nutrition.

Today I saw the fish sold at around 100 yen (less than a dollar) and bought many of them and decided to make many saury dishes.

Saury in oil
I stewed fillets of saury with Japanese seasoning and oil.

They are so good with Japanese sake (rice wine)!! 😋

Sanma Takikomi Gohan (seasoned and mixed rice with saury)

Salted and grilled saury, garnished with grated daikon radish and a wedge of lemon.
This is the staple of the Japanese meal.

I made a western style version of oiled saury next day with herbs and wine 🙂
