The word Oyako means parent and child in Japanese. The main ingredients of this dish are chicken and egg so you can figure out where the name came from.
Oyakodon (親子丼), is a quick, easy, yummy, and filling dish along with Gyudon, but the good things about this dish are not only those. It is low-cost and very balanced from a nutrition perspective. So it is popular among families who have growing kids.
I also had this dish quite often as my mom was a busy woman. She knew no one (including my dad) will complain about this dish.

What I find interesting is that although beef is expensive in Japan, we find many cheap chain store restaurants that specialize in Gyudon, but none for Oyakodon. On the other hand, there are restaurants in the rather higher class range that serves Oyakodon that is a bit different from the ones made at home, made with good quality ingredients, or by using a different method.
So as you can see, Oyakodon may look easy to prepare, but it is actually a dish that is much more profound!

In our class, you will learn how to prepare dashi in an authentic way, and by using domestically grown chicken and eggs, also how to make Oyakodon that is as delicious as the ones served at the restaurants!

Remarks

  • Just bring yourself! Aprons are available for free.
  • No need to clean up.
  • Children aged 6 and older are counted as separate participants. If you like to bring children under 6 years old to your class, we recommend you to book a private class. Thank you for your understanding.
  • Take-away is possible except for raw food, but management outside of the classroom is requested by yourself and we are not responsible for any trouble on hygiene. Please bring your own take-away container, ice cooler etc.
  • Price includes lesson, all ingredients, printed recipes and the listed number of drinks.
