Gyudon (牛丼), is a popular quick meal (especially for boys) consisting of a bowl of steamed rice topped with thinly sliced beef and onion simmered in a sweet and savory dashi broth (fish and seaweed stock) seasoned with soy sauce and mirin (sweet rice wine). It is commonly topped with pickled ginger, ground chili pepper, and served with a raw egg or a soft boiled egg.
Do Japanese people really eat raw eggs!?
Yes, we do! and we love it (me? so-so), some have them on a daily basis. I know this unique food custom in Japan surprises people from overseas. This is not widely known, but Japan is the only country you can eat raw eggs. Japanese eggs are under strict hygiene control. All eggs in the market are washed and pasteurized. Therefore you do not have to worry about salmonella poisoning. Maybe you will get addicted to it once you try… Of course, I will not force you to eat eggs raw. We can also make soft boiled eggs 🙂
Gyudon can be found everywhere in Japan. There are so many fast food chains specialize in the dish. Students and “Salary-man” loves Gyudon because it tastes good and it’s filling, and very reasonably priced. I don’t know how Gyudon chains can do such low pricing because beef is pretty expensive in Japan. Some people say they use low-grade meat… Anyway, it tastes good but nothing beats homemade with good fresh ingredients!
* A welcome drink and a glass of wine, beer or sake are included. Bringing in your own bottles is welcome!* Menus are subject to change based on the availability of items in the market.
