No rules! Hand-rolled sushi makes great get-together!

Temaki-sushi (we call it Temakizushi ‘手巻き寿司’), literally “hand-rolled sushi” is another easy-to-make sushi cooked at home. As you can see in my menu list, there are many types of sushi, but I think Temakizushi is best suited for serving a crowd.

It is a great party food because it’s easy to prepare (a host prepares the sushi rice and cut all the fillings beforehand and display everything on the table, and let everyone serve themselves.), and everyone can enjoy making their own hand roll sushi with the fillings they like. When we plan to make Temakizushi for my family, we get ingredients that each member of the family would like. Tuna and shrimps for my father and brother in law, canned tuna, crab meat and eggs for kids, avocado for my sister, and vegetables for everyone. Of course, my mom and I will eat anything 😉

You see why it is the best for parties! Easy, look fabulous, can be served for adults, kids, and vegetarians at the same time, and it’s fun!!

I’ll show you all the basics from cooking rice properly to making seasoned sushi rice and preparing all your ingredients includes Tamagoyaki (egg omelet) and Miso soup from scratch.

There are no rules as to what should go inside. Common traditional ingredients are raw fish and sweet shrimps, salmon roe, cooked prawns, sweet egg omelet, vegetables like cucumber and radish sprouts, and Natto (fermented soybeans). But these days we also enjoy avocado, cheese, smoked salmon, prawn cutlet, and etc..
The possibilities are limitless. Once you learn the basic here, get creative and make Temakizushi with your unique ingredients at home. I’ll be glad to hear from you and know what is your favorite filling!
